It was a double-victory for the Bogan Bulls at Larkin Oval last Friday night (June 28, 2024), with both the men’s and ladies’ teams winning against Bourke/Brewarrina in the annual “Indigenous round”.

It was the second time Nyngan has played the competitive Bourke/Brewarrina side this season and both Bulls teams showed improvement on home turf.

Men’s coach Rob Kennedy said the 25-7 win was the best performance of the year for the Bulls.

“It was a very physical game with a lot of hard hits and with the penalties 20-6 against us from the Bourke referee and three fellas in the sin bin we did extremely well to stay composed,” he said.

“Our forwards loved the contact and proved too good with a dominant display and Matty Sheather, Craigo Ticehurst and Irish Kenny proved hard to handle.

“Matty Sheather scored twice proving a real handful until he knocked up! Training is Tuesday and Thursdays, Matty - geez he’ll be good when he’s fit!”

Kennedy said the penalty count and the sinbins took their toll on the Bulls towards the end and they struggled to keep the Bourke/Bre at bay in the second half.

“There were some extremely positive signs and there would have been some very sore boys on Saturday morning.”

Kennedy said despite the win, the Bulls needed to stay focussed if they wanted to defeat competition leaders, Warren – which defeated Walgett by more than 20 points on the weekend.

“They continue to set the standard,” Kennedy said.

Best on field for the Bulls was Matty Sheather, closely followed by Henry Weston, Brendon Nelson and Irish Kenny.

“What a pick-up Kenny has been for the Bulls - tough, smart and positive.”

“The old warhorses Tommy Cleaver, Mullengudgery Manning and Jimmy Elias were again very good and Bailey Brooks who has played all his footy in the second row was also very positive with excellent defence and plenty of strong runs.”

“All in all, I reinforce we may have finally turned the corner, and if we get to training the future is exciting.”

Meanwhile the ladies side continued its unbeaten run, with a 41-12 victory to remain firmly at the top of the Western Plains ladder.
