Bogan Shire Council engaged Albury-based Tonkin Group to carry out a thorough investigation of the pool system so remedial works could be scheduled over winter. Council’s director of development and environmental services, Cathy Black, said the pool lost a substantial amount of water over the past swimming season, but it was difficult to locate the source of the leak as the pipes were all underground. Tonkin inserted cameras into the pipelines and was able to locate several reasons for the water loss.

It was found the original cast iron pipes linking both pools to the pump station were almost totally corroded in parts, and also more than half full of silt and river sand in places. There was also found to be deterioration in the pits and culverts in and around both pools. Tonkin Group made several recommendations to council to repair the damage, including relining the pipes and culverts. It has also suggested using a vacuum truck to suck the excess sand and silt from the pipes to improve water flow and prevent blockages.

In a report to the June council meeting, Mrs. Black said the estimated cost of these remedial works was $62,815. Councillor Graham Jackson moved a resolution for the repair work to be carried out, using savings from council’s operational budget. The resolution was seconded by Cr Victoria Boag and passed.

Meanwhile, in a closed session of council, it was agreed to renew Scott Bartley’s contract to manage the pool for the upcoming season.
